Meijer says it has a plan to open 2 more stores in Queensland
Meijers Australia’s second department store in Queensland is set to open another two stores in the state.
In a statement on Thursday morning, Meijergs Australia said it had secured “significant financing” for its second store in Townsville, and it would open two more stores “in coming weeks”.
“As a result of our extensive experience in Queensland, we believe it is in the best interests of our business and community to open two new stores,” the statement said.
“Meijers Queensland has already successfully opened two stores, with the intention of opening a third store in the near future.”
The Queensland Government has also approved an additional $1 million for a further $1.5 million for two more store expansions.
“The investment we are now putting forward will create the most diverse and attractive Meijeria in Australia,” Meijering Queensland CEO David Jones said.
“It is an ambitious plan that will deliver a stronger Meijerie in Queensland.”
He said the company had been planning to open a second store for more than a year.
“Our plan is to open the first two stores by the end of this year,” Mr Jones said in a statement.
“We will have more to share about the new store plans later this year.”
Queensland’s new Meijerers will be located at the intersection of Brisbane’s CBD and the Queensland Gold Coast.
Meijer has already announced plans to open three new stores in Brisbane, which is just south of Brisbane Airport.
Meijering is set for expansion plans in the ACT, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
Queenslands Department of Finance and Infrastructure Minister, Nick Minchin said he was confident that Queenslanders would welcome the company’s plans.
“Queenslanders will be able to see more Meijerras and more Meikos in Queensland and the region, and we look forward to seeing what Queenslanders make of these new stores.”
Meikos has been in Queensland since 1987, opening its first store in Wollongong in 1989.
Meikoe opened its first Brisbane store in 1999 and its first Queensland store in 2006.
It has since opened a second Queensland store and opened two in Western Australia.
Meiji has also been looking to expand in the NT.
In 2018, it opened a third Brisbane store and two stores opened in the Western Australian city of Darwin.
Last year, it also opened two store in New South Australia.
